The Catholic Charities Refugee Youth Mentoring Program is launching an accelerated group mentoring program tailored for refugee young adults interested in pursuing higher education. This program requires mentors to support and guide the students while providing a collaborative and engaging environment. This program aims to cater to the unique needs of refugee young adults as they learn about navigating higher education, focusing on developing the necessary knowledge and skills for success.

Mentors will play an instrumental role in this process as they help facilitate group meetings and activities, guide mentees through designated lesson plans, and forge meaningful connections with program participants. The program will last 3 months, beginning at the end of May and ending at the end of August. Mentors will meet with the group for a 3-hour meeting each week, with additional 1:1 time with mentees. They will also receive training from program staff on mentoring best practices, working with refugees, and group coordination and facilitation.

 

Tasks and Responsibilities for this role include:

-  Attending and actively participating in mentor orientation and pre-match training

-  Meeting with the group of mentees and mentors each week for three months

-  Collaborating with other mentors to create lessons and activities relevant to different parts of the college admissions/enrollment process

-  Working to develop supportive relationships with designated mentees

-  Completing and submitting monthly activity logs

-  Regularly communicating with the Refugee Youth Mentor Program Coordinator to check-in and follow up

 

Mentor Requirements:

-  Must be 18 years or older

-  Must be willing to commit 3 hours of volunteer time per week for 3 months

-  Must be willing to work with a diverse group of students from varying backgrounds

-  Recent or current higher education experience (ie. Undergraduate enrollment) is preferred
