DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER CRISIS LINE VOLUNTEER

Volunteer Position Description

 


 

 

AREA: Emergency Safe Shelter – The Bernard House, Crisis Line | Off-site & On-site

 

PURPOSE & IMPACT: The Domestic Violence & Shelter Crisis Line Volunteer has the vital role of answering calls from the community and victims that pertain to domestic violence and program services. These volunteers help survivors with the resources needed to make effective decisions and assist them in navigating crisis, or simply answer questions regarding the services that we offer.

 

*On-site volunteer opportunities are subject to COVID health and safety restrictions.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Being on call via cell phone to take calls from answering service after hours
  • Using empathy, warmth, and listening skills to help victims in crisis
  • Recording and completing documentation to turn into shelter staff
  • Providing callers with alternative options for safety when shelter is not deemed necessary or the shelter is full

 

 

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES NEEDED:

  • Ability to work in a crisis setting.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients while maintaining compassion.
  • Flexible, empathetic, and effective listening and communication skills.
  • Working phone and ability to take calls privately to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Enjoy working with diverse groups of people.
  • Outgoing, friendly, and non-judgmental.
  • Flexible and a team player.

 

 

COMMITMENT NEEDED:

Flexible! Mostly after normal business hours. Preferably willing to commit to the program for at least 3 months.

 

 

TRAINING & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed DVSAC Volunteer Application including a background screening and TBI fingerprinting. *Background report must come back free of violent offenses only.
  • Training occurs onsite by shadowing the Shelter Operations Manager or another onsite staff member.
