SHELTER SUPPORTER
Volunteer Position Description
AREA: Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Center's Emergency Safe Shelter (The Bernard House) | On-site
PURPOSE & IMPACT: The Safe Shelter Supporter has the important role of assisting with day-to-day operations of The Bernard House through donation organization, room cleanings for new families, helping with on-site special events, or other needs that may arise for the individuals and families in shelter.
*On-site volunteer opportunities are subject to COVID health and safety restrictions.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist shelter staff in general shelter upkeep and needs including but not limited to donation support, organization, meal assistance, paperwork filing, children’s needs, or helping manage a special event, such as a holiday party.
- Uphold confidentiality and maintain professional boundaries.
SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES NEEDED:
- Ability to work in a crisis setting.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients while maintaining compassion.
- Enjoy working with diverse groups of people.
- Outgoing, friendly, and non-judgmental.
- Flexible and a team player.
COMMITMENT NEEDED:
Flexible! Mostly week-day work. Preferably willing to commit to the program for at least 3 months.
TRAINING & REQUIREMENTS:
- Completed DVSAC Volunteer Application including a background screening and TBI fingerprinting. *Background report must come back free of violent offenses only.
- Training occurs onsite by shadowing the Shelter Operations Manager or another onsite staff member.
